City Solicitor

Mission
To provide representation and advice to the City and its officials in numerous areas including but not limited to: zoning issues, employment law, civil rights, civil service, contract actions, real estate, workers’ compensation, education law, tort actions involving personal injury and property damage claims.  


Function

The City Solicitor's Office is responsible for commencing and prosecuting all actions and other legal proceedings and suits begun by the city or by any officer thereof, and defending all actions and suits brought against the city in any court or other tribunal of the Commonwealth or of the United States. The City Solicitor advises and assists all city officials and employees in the lawful performance of their duties for the effective and orderly operation and administration of local government.  Members of the solicitor’s department regularly attend and provide advice at meetings of the City Council and sub-committees thereof and to several City boards and commissions.  In addition to drafting ordinances and other legal documents, numerous verbal and written opinions are rendered to the City Council and Department Heads.

The City Solicitor’s Office does not advise residents or private citizens on legal matters.
